Inside HOYA's Sensei Innovation Events for Eye Care Professionals: More Than a Meeting

There is a word in Japanese—Sensei—that carries more weight than its translation suggests. Beyond “teacher,” it describes someone who has walked the path before you, leads by example, and understands that knowledge is most valuable when it is shared. For HOYA Vision Care, that word is more than a name for a series of events. It is a statement of purpose.

This year, HOYA Vision Care North America is launching a series of Sensei Innovation Events, a curated series of gatherings in key cities across the United States and Canada, designed exclusively for independent eye care professionals who are central to everything HOYA does. These are not trade shows, and they are not sales calls. They are something different: a deliberate effort to bring the best minds in eye care into the same room, to learn from one another, and to leave better equipped for the work that matters most.

"The Sensei Innovation Events are an extension of that commitment — bringing together experts, thought leaders, and practitioners to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and advance the future of vision care. Together, we succeed in an increasingly dynamic marketplace."

— Steven Haifawi, Senior Vice President, U.S. Commercial, HOYA Vision Care

Why Now?

The landscape for independent eye care professionals has never been more complex. Patients have more options, more information, and higher expectations than at any point in recent memory. Technology is advancing at a pace that can be difficult to keep up with.

  • Addressing challenges facing independent eye care professionals:
    • Increasing patient options, access to information, and expectations.
    • Rapid technological advancement in lens designs, myopia protocols, and digital tools.
    • A complex marketplace of retail giants and digital disruptors.

What has not changed is what actually differentiates the best independent practices: the depth of their clinical expertise, the quality of the relationships they build with patients, and the confidence they bring to every recommendation they make. That is exactly what the Sensei Innovation Events are designed to strengthen.

Dynamically Built for Success

Each Sensei Innovation Event is structured around three core objectives: education, connection, and elevation.

Education comes through COPE-certified presentations and expert-led sessions covering the latest clinical developments, lens technology, and patient care strategies. HOYA will bring real innovation into the room, not in the form of a catalog, but as hands-on demonstrations that let practitioners see and feel the difference that precision engineering makes. Attendees leave with continuing education credits and, more importantly, with knowledge they can put to work immediately.

Connection is the part that cannot be replicated in a webinar or an email newsletter. There is something irreplaceable about sitting across from a colleague who has figured out a solution to a problem you have been wrestling with, or hearing a panel of peers discuss the clinical and business challenges that are keeping them up at night. The Sensei events create that space—an environment where ECPs can speak candidly, ask hard questions, and build relationships with the people who share their professional world.

Elevation is the goal that ties the other two together. HOYA's mission, improving lives through better vision, is realized only through the professionals who deliver vision care every day. Investing in their expertise, their confidence, and their sense of community is not ancillary to that mission. It is the mission.

Rooted in Something Deeper
HOYA was founded in Tokyo in 1941. For more than 80 years, the company has operated according to a set of values that are genuinely Japanese in character: Thoughtful Innovation, Dedicated Care, and Thorough Craftsmanship. These are not marketing slogans; they are the organizing principles behind how HOYA designs its products, trains its people, and engages with the professionals who bring those products to patients.

The Sensei name is an expression of those values. It honors the eye care professionals themselves, recognizing that ECPs attending these events are not students waiting to be taught. They are experts who lead their communities, inspire the next generation of practitioners, and advance the profession through everything they do. HOYA's role in these events is not to lecture. It is to create the conditions for great thinking to happen and to be a partner in that process.

Across North America

The Sensei Innovation Events will take place in key cities and customer markets throughout the United States and Canada in 2026. Each event is intentionally curated and limited in size to preserve the intimacy and quality of dialogue that make them valuable.

For eye care professionals who have felt the pull toward a more connected, better-resourced professional community, these events are an answer to that instinct. HOYA is investing in this series because it believes the independent ECP community is worth investing in—because when practitioners thrive, patients do too.
